Of the 80,000 volunteers expected to be active at the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic Games next summer, 10,000 have resigned.
This was announced by the Japanese television station NHK. The broadcaster bases this on statements by members of the local organizing committee.
The departure is probably related to concerns about the spread of the coronavirus. Several polls have shown that a majority of the population is currently not happy with the event being held in the country.
Some prominent physicians also expressed their views in this direction.
Both the Japanese government and the International Olympic Committee have stated several times that the Olympic Games will not go ahead. The event was postponed for a year in 2020 due to the pandemic.
