The British government has received 1 billion pounds back from companies that have received some form of wage support.
In retrospect, these companies were not entitled to the subsidies or returned the money on their own initiative.
The British tax authorities report that nearly £709 million of the aid has been repaid by companies that did not actually have to return it. Another £319 million has been recovered from companies that over-applied.
It concerns financial support for companies that had sent their employees home due to the corona crisis. They were reimbursed up to 80 percent of the wage costs. The amount refunded is only a fraction of what London spent in aid packages.
They cost the treasury at least £352 billion.
