The Russians currently have the upper hand in the battle in the hotly contested eastern Ukraine’s Luhansk region.
A Ukrainian general acknowledged that, but he also said that Ukraine is doing everything it can and doing everything it can.
Observers expect that the Russians want to completely conquer Luhansk and the neighbouring Donetsk region, both in the Donbas region, from the Ukrainians. Part of the area has been under the control of pro-Russian rebels since 2014.
The general also did not rule out new Russian missile attacks on the relatively quiet western Ukraine. Ukraine is said to have seen Russia move Iskander missile systems to the Brest region of neighbouring Belarus, from which Ukraine could be targeted.
