Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been released from intensive care after 12 days, but he must remain in the hospital for now, Ansa news agency reported on Sunday.
The 86-year-old Italian was hospitalized earlier this month for a lung infection caused by chronic leukaemia, a condition that had not previously been disclosed. The four-time prime minister has a history of heart ailments, and he was also hospitalized in 2020 for a lung infection after contracting Covid.
A few days ago, the doctors announced they saw a “continued steady improvement in respiratory and renal function”.
The flamboyant right-wing and populist politician presided over four governments from 1994 to 2011. With Berlusconi’s health deteriorating in recent weeks, there is speculation about the future of Forza Italia.
However, the party’s stability as a junior partner in Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing coalition poses no threat to the government majority.
