US authorities filed a complaint against Uber on Monday, accusing the ride-hailing platform of misleading users with promotions for Uber One.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), responsible for consumer protection, has alleged that Uber violated the law. It claims customers automatically signed up for Uber One without their consent.
“Americans are tired of being signed up for unwanted subscriptions that seem impossible to cancel,” FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson said in a statement about the complaint.
“We accuse Uber of not only misleading customers about their subscriptions, but also of making cancellation unreasonably difficult.”
Uber One costs about ten dollars a month. The service offers discounts on groceries or takeaways ordered through Uber Eats. Uber is said to be jumping on the bandwagon for 25 a month.
FTC lawyers say the promise is misleading and that the company is making it difficult to set up Uber One, even though it claimed it could do so at any time. Uber, for its part, denies the allegations. It says most subscription cancellations take less than 20 seconds.
