Israel again carried out dozens of airstrikes on the Gaza Strip on the night from Sunday to Monday. Palestinian militants are said to have fired rockets at the southern cities of Beer Sheva and Ashkelon.
Israel’s military confirms the attacks on Twitter. AFP news agency reports that there are power cuts in various places. According to the Israeli army, a Hamas intelligence complex was one of the targets of the attacks.
Israel and militant Palestinians have been bombarding each other for about a week. Hamas fires rockets continuously, and Israel retaliates with airstrikes. This is the most severe armed conflict in the area since 2014.
On Sunday alone, at least 42 Palestinians are said to have died in the Gaza Strip, including 13 children, bringing the total to 200. Ten people have been killed on the Israeli side.
Tensions between Israel and the Palestinians have been driven to new lows by the threat of expulsion of families from an Arab neighbourhood in East Jerusalem. They have to make way for Jewish settlers.
This led to fierce protests at the al-Aqsa mosque and bombardments between fighters from, among others, the Hamas movement in Gaza and the Israeli armed forces.
