Cases of poisoned schoolgirls were reported again in several Iranian regions on Sunday. The mystery, meanwhile, is causing a great deal of concern.
On Sunday, a poisoning was reported in two high schools in the western city of Abhar and the southwestern city of Ahvaz. There was also poisoning in a primary school in the west of Zanjan, according to the ISNA news agency. In addition, news agencies Mehr and Ilna report poisonings in the holy city of Mashhad (northeast), Shiraz (south) and Isfahan (centre).
In recent months, according to an official count, several hundred cases of poisoning have been reported in at least 52 institutions.
The many cases of poisoning have caused concern among parents, who are urging the authorities to intervene. President Ebrahim Raisi on Friday asked Iran’s interior and intelligence ministries to “fail the enemy’s plot, which aims to sow fear and despair among the population.”
Earlier, the deputy health minister said that it is likely an action by groups that want to end girls’ education in the strictly Islamic country. In addition, several girls reported a strange smell before getting sick, suggesting exposure to a toxic gas.
