Russian radio station Echo Moskvy is shutting down after being taken off the air due to critical coverage of the war in Ukraine.
The independent station attracted some 1.8 million listeners daily.
The board of directors of Echo Moskvy has decided by a majority to close the radio station, and the website, editor-in-chief Aleksey Venediktov said via Telegram. Access to Echo Moskvy was blocked on Tuesday after criticism from Russian authorities.
The station is accused of spreading “deliberately misinformation” about the war in Ukraine. Moscow says the Russian invasion is a “special military operation”. The media should not use words such as “attack” or “invasion”.
Ekho Moskvy was founded in 1990 and developed into one of the most respected media in Russia. The station was also one of the few media outlets where critics could express themselves.
