China on Monday demanded that the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom cancel a United Nations (UN) video conference on Beijing’s crackdown on the Uyghurs.
“The video conference, scheduled for Wednesday, is based on pure lies and political bias,” Chinese diplomats told the UN in a statement. “Beijing is urging the cancellation of this event, which meddles in domestic affairs, and calls on other UN members to boycott this event.”
According to human rights organizations, at least 1 million Uyghurs and other, mainly Muslim, minorities are being held in concentration camps in the Chinese province of Xinjiang. The organizations accuse the authorities of including forced labour and forced sterilization of women.
China states in the statement that the current situation in Xinjiang is better than ever. There would be stability, rapid economic development, and people of all ethnicities would “live together harmoniously”.
“The US claims it cares about the human rights of Muslims, while it is known worldwide that it killed Muslims in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria,” China said in the statement. “It is the US and its followers who have killed the most Muslims worldwide.”
At Wednesday’s meeting, UN ambassadors from the US, Germany, and the UK, representing the Uyghurs and human rights organization Human Rights Watch, are expected to take the floor.
