The European Commission rejects in advance a tariff increase of 25 percent on aluminium and steel by the US. US President Donald Trump told journalists on Sunday that he will do so.
The European Commission said in a written statement that it has “not yet received any official notification of the imposition of additional tariffs on EU goods.”
Although it says it does not respond to “general announcements without details or written clarification”, it does note that the EU sees no justification for imposing tariffs on its exports.
If Trump persists, the EU will respond “to protect the interests of European companies, workers and consumers from unjustified measures”, according to the statement issued on Monday. The European Commission says that imposing tariffs is “unlawful and economically counterproductive”.
