Google Writes a Quarter of New Code With AI

The impact of AI on programming is coming faster than many think. Google itself states that AI writes a large part of its code.

During the financial results discussion, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai noted that 25 percent of all new code written within Google today comes from AI.

Pichai notes that people constantly review the generated code before it is deployed, but the CEO said this “helps them do more and move faster. “

AI has been mentioned for several years as a boost to productivity, and programming also falls under that category. In the meantime, there are also quite a few AI tools specifically for programming. Think of Github Copilot or Codex from OpenAI.

Many people fear that many AI systems still hallucinate and would, therefore, introduce incorrect code, bugs, or insecurities. In that respect, human oversight and final responsibility remain essential.
