Nearly 300,000 refugees from Ukraine have been registered in Germany, the Interior Ministry reported. There are currently 294,508 persons known to the German authorities, increasing more than 16 percent compared to a week earlier.
As in other countries, the group of refugees mainly consists of women, children and the elderly. Men up to the age of 60 must remain in Ukraine in case they are drafted into the army.
Because there are no fixed border controls within the European Union and there is no reporting obligation for Ukrainians, it is not clear exactly how many refugees have come to Germany. However, due to the refugee flow, the federal police are carrying out extra checks at the borders, on trains and at stations.
More than 4.1 million people have fled the country as a result of the war in Ukraine. More than half have crossed the border into Poland. Some travel from Poland to other EU countries. Germany believes that refugees in the European Union should be spread evenly.
