The corona cluster in the Australian state of Victoria continues to grow. The number of infections has increased by 11 in 24 hours to 51.
Authorities warn that the second most populous state in the country could worsen in the coming days.
Victoria has been under a seven-day lockdown since Friday. Hundreds of locations have been designated as risk areas because infected persons have visited them. Depending on the situation, other visitors to those locations, for example, supermarkets, gyms and cinemas, must be quarantined or tested.
Victoria Deputy Prime Minister James Merlino says the situation is “incredibly serious” and will be critical in the coming days. He warns that the number of infections in the southeastern state could increase before the situation improves.
Two employees and a nursing home resident for the elderly have tested positive for the coronavirus. Authorities fear that these types of homes will be hit hard by Covid-19.
Victoria implemented one of the world’s toughest and longest lockdowns last year amid the second wave of contamination. More than 800 people died in the state, mostly elderly residents of nursing homes. That is 90 percent of all Australian corona deaths since the start of the pandemic.
