Sony wants to prepare the PS5 for an internal memory expansion this summer via an update. Bloomberg reports that.
It is difficult to expand the storage capacity of the game console, while the latest games often consume a considerable amount of memory.
The standard edition of the PlayStation 5 is equipped with a Solid State Drive (SSD) with a capacity of about 825 gigabytes. However, only 667.2 GB of memory is actually available for games, while the latest Call of Duty game, for example, consumes 133 GB alone.
Thanks to the SSD – much faster than a classic hard drive – and the more modern design of the PS5 architecture, games on the new console load a lot faster, but users cannot just connect the first external hard drive: such a drive can only for the ‘older’ PS4 games are used.
The good news is that every PlayStation 5 is equipped with an expansion slot for a second SSD of the so-called M.2 type. However, Sony has not activated that lock to date, but according to Bloomberg, a solution is in the works. A firmware update should speed up the PlayStation 5’s fans to prevent the PS5 hardware from overheating after installing additional internal memory.
The PlayStation 5 is easy to open by removing the white plastic protective caps. Therefore, adding extra internal memory is not that difficult, but less experienced users should leave that job to a technician.
Incidentally, it should also eventually become possible to connect external hard drives or SSDs to which PS5 games can also be housed. But nothing is known yet about the timing of that position.
