Members of the British opposition have called for an investigation into the possible hacking of ex-President Liz Truss’s mobile phone by Russian agents. According to the Mail on Sunday newspaper, this happened when Truss was still secretary of state.
The paper cites anonymous security sources as saying that Truss’ personal smartphone was hacked “by agents believed to be working for the Kremlin.” They would presumably have had access to ‘top secret exchanges with international partners’. A government spokesman said it would not comment on individuals’ security measures but added that “robust systems are in place to protect against cyber threats.”
“It is essential that all these security concerns are the subject of investigations and are addressed at the highest level,” said Labor MP and shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper. The hacking was discovered when Truss was Secretary of State and campaigning to replace Boris Johnson as Prime Minister.
The hackers allegedly had access to Truss messages for a year, including “compassionate discussions” about the war in Ukraine. The newspaper also writes that Prime Minister Boris Johnson was immediately informed and proceeded with a total ‘news blackout’. “We urgently need an independent investigation to find out the truth,” said Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran.
