On Monday, an 18-year-old Russian has blown himself up with a bomb in an Orthodox school. At least one other person was injured. The police report this. The assailant was a former high school student.
The violence took place at an Orthodox school next to an adjacent monastery in the town of Serpukhov, south of Moscow. “An eighteen-year-old former student broke into the school building and blew himself up. He also injured a fifteen-year-old teenager in the process,” said the interior minister of the Moscow region.
According to the minister, police forces have evacuated school staff and students. The balance of the violence has yet to be finalized, but according to the Russian news agencies Ria Novosti, Tass and Interfax, the number of victims is higher. Anonymous sources within the police would speak of seven injured. According to Tass, the perpetrator also died from blood loss.
Police have opened an investigation into the young man’s motive. Investigators say that he may have felt bullied during his schooling and committed the attack out of hatred.
Armed attacks on public places and schools have long been rare in Russia but have increased in recent years. As a result, gun laws were recently tightened at the request of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
