In the southern French region of Var, thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes after fierce forest fires broke out last night.
Tourists on campsites have also had to look for safer places. 750 firefighters have been deployed to extinguish the fire.
Last night, heavy forest fires broke out in the Var region of southern France. Thousands of people have been evacuated as a precaution. The Var is a popular tourist destination, so there are many tourists among the evacuees.
The fire started near the village of Gonfaron, about 50 kilometres from Saint-Tropez. From there, the fire quickly moved to La Garde-Freinet, Grimaud and La Môle. About 750 firefighters are working to put out the fire. 450 of them have been deployed at the fire in Gonfaron.
French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said on Twitter that the weather conditions are “extremely unfavourable”. There is a strong wind, and the area is bone dry. According to local authorities, about 3,500 hectares of forest and heath are threatened by the fire.
