After being tied up in the Suez Canal for a week and chained in Egypt for more than three months, shipping company Evergreen will get hold of the large container ship Ever Given again on Wednesday.
This happens after an agreement on the payment of compensation to channel authority SCA was finalized. According to SCA, the release will be accompanied by a ceremony.
The Ever Given was on its way to Rotterdam when it got caught in a sandstorm in the southern part of the Suez Canal. As a result, the ship, one of the largest container ships globally, came to a standstill. After six days, the Ever Given was able to pull loose, but by then, hundreds of ships were already stuck in traffic on both sides.
The release of the Ever Given does not mean that the ship will depart immediately. Shipping company Evergreen indicated earlier that it might take some time to prepare the ship again. In the port of Rotterdam, they do not expect the Ever Given immediately. According to a spokesperson, the container ship will arrive next Friday at the earliest.
