Apple Registers ‘realityOS’: is the AR/VR Headset Really Coming?

Tech giant Apple registered the trademark ‘realityOS’ on the eve of its Worldwide Developers Conference.

It would be the operating system for the smart glasses that the fruit brand has reportedly been working on for a long time. Insiders expect the first details about the gadget next week.

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, held this year from June 6-10, traditionally focuses on the company’s next-generation operating systems. This year it is more specifically iOS and iPadOS 16, macOS 13 and watchOS 9, but most of the attention could be focused on newcomer realityOS.

The name realityOS already accidentally popped up in the App Store update logs earlier this year. Bloomberg news agency says it already found evidence of the existence of such an operating system in 2017, then under the internal code name Oak.

The AR/VR headset itself is expected to get two 4K micro-OLED screens, in addition to more than a dozen camera modules, eye-tracking capabilities, spatial audio and support for hand gestures. The first model is expected to cost around three thousand dollars – more affordable versions will follow later.
