Belarus is closed because of the corona crisis. The government announced that the land borders would be closed to Belarusian citizens later this month.
An opposition news medium compared that crisis measure to a notorious Soviet-era barrier: the Iron Curtain.
The decree published Wednesday evening states that the measures will take effect after ten days.
Residents of the Eastern European country then need a valid reason to leave the country. Foreign visitors are not stopped when they travel to Belarus but must be quarantined for ten days.
The opposition-minded medium Nexta Live, which publishes messages via social media, writes that there is “a new Iron Curtain”. There is speculation on social media about why the government is now deciding to close such a border.
“The real reason is that too many people want to flee from this oppressive regime,” speculates one Twitterer.
