The CEO of the United Nations has again appointed billionaire Michael Bloomberg as climate envoy.
He must commit to more ambitious climate policy in the run-up to an international climate summit in November.
The former mayor of New York already has experience as a climate envoy. He also held that role in 2018 and 2019. After that, he took a step back to make a bid for the presidency in the US.
Bloomberg pumped a lot of money into his campaign but still lost to Joe Biden in the Democratic primaries. He later also won the presidential election.
The United Nations says that Bloomberg will consult with representatives of governments and the business community, among other things.
The stakes are to “complete and implement plans, especially in high-emitting countries, industries and sectors, to accelerate the transition to a clean energy economy dramatically”.
