One of the two flight recorders of the plane that crashed in southern China on Monday has been located, a spokesperson for the Chinese aviation authority said. The data in the black box may provide insight into the cause of the crash.
The China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737-800 plunged from a height of more than 8 kilometres on Monday. The seven-year-old plane was en route from Kunming to Guangzhou and crashed into the mountains near Wuzhou, a city in the Guangxi region.
The 123 passengers and 9 crew members did not survive the crash, it turned out earlier. Nevertheless, the search is still ongoing. Due to bad weather, rescue work at the crash site had to be halted on Wednesday.
Boeing previously said it would send technical experts to China to help investigate the cause of the crash. China Eastern Airlines is grounding its aircraft of the concerned type. The Chinese aviation regulator has launched a wide-ranging investigation into possible safety problems.
