Germany: Too Many Provocations From Turkey

Turkey has committed “too many provocations” in recent months to ease tensions between Turkey and the EU.

EU Foreign Ministers are considering what “consequences” this should have, says German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.

Germany is chairing the European Union for this six months but is still manoeuvring cautiously in the turbulent relationship with Turkey. EU member states Greece and Cyprus have been arguing with Turkey for months about, among other things, gas drilling by Turkey in Greek and Cypriot waters.

Both neighbouring countries are asking the EU for sanctions. France has also been pushing for a stricter stance for some time.

“Germany has made an extraordinary effort in recent months to find a way to establish a dialogue between Turkey and the EU,” Maas said before the meeting of EU foreign ministers.

“Unfortunately, the tensions have prevented direct conversations could be started. However, there have been far too many provocations. “
