Hundreds of Criminals Escaped During Russian Retreat From Kherson

Hundreds of serious criminals and murder suspects escaped from the local prison during the retreat of Russian troops from the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson.

However, only a part could be arrested, the police said.

Of the more than 450 detainees who fled, 166 have now been re-arrested. In addition, a murderer sentenced to life was transferred to a prison in a neighbouring town. The fugitives include more than 100 men charged with murder.

According to the media, the prisoners were released by a prison employee.

Last Friday, Russian units completed their retreat from the west bank of the Dnieper River and surrendered the major city of Kherson. It was the only regional capital the Russians had taken since their invasion of Ukraine in late February.
