The Israeli army shot and killed three Palestinians on Friday and wounded at least ten more in a raid on the West Bank city of Jenin. Jenin is known as a stronghold of armed militias fighting Israel.
According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, the three people were killed when soldiers fired on a vehicle. This was followed by a firefight between people from Jenin and the Israeli military. According to the AFP news agency, the victims were 23 and 24 years old.
The Israeli army says soldiers were conducting an operation to track down militias’ weapons. The soldiers would have been fired upon when they arrived at one of the locations and so they fired back. “The soldiers were shot at from the vehicle.”
The region has seen more gunfights and more Palestinians being killed in military raids. Last month, journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was shot dead in the region while reporting on an Israeli military operation.
