A meeting between the presidents of Russia and Ukraine is only possible after the resumption of peace negotiations between the two countries. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said this during a visit to Turkey.
Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky has long wanted to sit down with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
His recent attempts to arrange a meeting have been unsuccessful. Before the peace talks stalled, Russian authorities said a meeting between the two leaders could only take place at a later stage in the negotiations.
Representatives of the Ukrainian and Russian governments met soon after the war broke out in Ukraine, but have not seen each other since late April. Distance negotiations have also stalled and both countries blame each other for the lack of a breakthrough.
