More than a hundred people died in a landslide in a jade mine in Myanmar. The authorities previously reported about 50 deaths, but have now adjusted that to 113.
The miners collected stones in the crowded area near the town of Hpakant in the northern state of Kachin when they were buried in a “mud wave” caused by heavy rains, the fire department said on Facebook.
“We have counted 113 bodies so far.”
A local police officer said the search and rescue had been suspended due to the heavy rainfall.
The mining region in Kachin tends to lead to fatal accidents.
Mining companies want to meet the high demand for jade from China and try to win the gem as soon as possible. They do not consider safety and the consequences for the environment.
