The military junta in Myanmar has banned the lawyer of deposed government leader Aung San Suu Kyi from speaking, according to a warning that Master Khin Maung Zaw posted on his Facebook page on Friday.
The lawyer is no longer allowed to talk to the media, diplomats, international organizations and foreign governments.
Khin Maung Zaw has been Suu Kyi’s mouthpiece until now. He has regularly briefed public opinion on the progress of the respective lawsuits against the Nobel laureate and the health of the 76-year-old.
Suu Kyi has been under house arrest since the military coup in early February. The justice system has charged her with half a dozen offences. She risks years in prison.
Observers and human rights activists suspect that the junta wants to silence the beloved politician for years with mock trials.
