In Chile, more than 100,000 people are now infected with the coronavirus. More than 1,100 people have died to date after being infected with the virus in the South American country.
This is evident from figures from the American Johns Hopkins University.
There have recently been demonstrations against government policy in Chile.
To combat the spread of the virus, a quarantine has been in place in and around the capital Santiago for weeks.
The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that the peak of the coronavirus pandemic in South and Central America has not yet been reached.
Among the countries with many new infections, the WHO has Chile, Brazil, Peru and Mexico as well.
Healthcare in these countries is under pressure. A few days ago, doctors in Chile warned that almost all beds in intensive care were occupied because of the crowds in the hospitals.
