Riots in Suburban Paris Over Coronavirus Measures

In the northern suburbs of Paris, violent clashes occurred between police and residents last night while enforcing strict lockdown measures.

Residents burned waste, set cars on fire and threw fireworks at the police.

It responded with rubber bullets and tear gas in the suburbs of Villeneuve-la-Garenne and Aulnay-sous-Bois, witnesses and police said Monday.

Tensions arose in the early hours of Saturday when a motorcyclist was injured during a police check in Villeneuve-la-Garenne, where some fifty angry bystanders gathered.

Police said the group of agents attacked “projectiles” during a nearly two-hour clash.

The motorcyclist was hospitalized with a broken leg and had to have an operation after hitting the open door of a police car. Residents claim that the door was opened intentionally so that it would bump into it.

Monday morning, peace had returned to Villeneuve-la-Garenne after a weekend of riots with fires and explosions in the suburbs.
