On Wednesday, US authorities deported dozens of Haitian asylum seekers to the Mexican border town of Ciudad Juárez.
With this, the US appears to be acting against an earlier agreement with Mexico that was still concluded under Donald Trump’s presidency.
Mexican authorities confirm the arrival of the deported Haitians. “The situation is extraordinary for us because the asylum seekers do not speak Spanish, which also puts them at greater risk,” said a spokesman for the Chihuahua state immigration service.
When the coronavirus spread rapidly in the United States in March, the US partially closed its borders to asylum seekers based on the public health law.
Mexico then agreed with the US that it would receive deported refugees from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador who had come to the US via Mexico. Under the public health law invoked by the US, immigrants should actually be sent back to their countries of origin.
