The United Kingdom does not intend to change its policy to improve its trade relationship with the European Union.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said so in response to reports that the British government would like to rethink its relationship with the EU. There was mention of an agreement that also applies between Switzerland and the EU.
Switzerland has some form of access to the European single market but must accept conditions in return, including the admission of workers from EU countries. Payments also go from Switzerland to Brussels.
“Under my leadership, the UK will not pursue any relationship with Europe based on alignment with EU law,” Sunak said at the yearly conference of the Confederation of British Industry, the UK’s largest employers’ organisation, in Birmingham on Monday.
The United Kingdom having its own regulatory freedom is “an important opportunity of Brexit,” he said.
