Referring to the Cold War, Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky has asked Germany for help in tearing down a new “wall” of Russia in Europe. He did so in his video message to the Bundestag.
According to Zelenski, it is not about “a Berlin wall”, referring to the years of physical separation between West and East Berlin, but a symbolic wall that deprives people of freedom. He stated that this wall “gets bigger with every bombardment”.
The Ukrainian leader also asked for support for his country’s attempt to join the European Union. He was also critical of the decision to stop Nord Stream 2, a gas pipeline from Russia to Germany. That should have happened much earlier, he said.
Zelensky received a standing ovation from German parliamentarians prior to his speech. The Ukrainian president previously delivered speeches in the parliaments of the United States and the United Kingdom, among others.
