China added 307 billionaires last year. In other words, almost every day, there is a new dollar billionaire in the country.
This is evident from the new rich list of the Chinese magazine Hurun on Wednesday. The world’s second-largest economy now has a total of $1,185 billionaires. That number has doubled in ten years.
According to Hurun, the largest wealth – a sloppy 60.6 billion dollars – can be found with 67-year-old Zhong Shanshan, the owner of the beverage company Nongfu Spring. He precedes Zhang Yiming, the 38-year-old founder of the video platform Tiktok. His net worth is estimated at $52.8 billion.
Zeng Yuqun, the CEO of car battery manufacturer CATL, is in third place with 47.4 billion dollars. Pony Ma, head of the technology company Tencent, and Alibaba founder Jack Ma, is further completed the top five.
Due to the Chinese housing market crisis, there is no longer a single real estate magnate in the top ten. However, Xu Jiayin, the founder of ailing real estate developer Evergrande, topped the list in 2017. He has since fallen back to 70th place but still has a net worth of $11.3 billion.
