About 3000 People Arrested in Belarus Protests

Police in Belarus arrested about 3,000 protesters during protests against the conduct of Sunday’s presidential elections.

This was reported by the Russian news agency RIA on the authority of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus.

Previous reports in Minsk spoke of at least 120 arrests. A demonstrator was also said to have been killed and dozens injured.

Authoritarian President Aleksander Lukashenko, reigning since 1994, was re-elected by a large majority, according to the official results. This time it was 80 percent.

The leader of the opposition Svetlana Tikhanovskaya argues that widespread fraud has been committed and that Lukashenko has in fact lost the elections ignominiously.
