Chinese Scientists: Babies May Have Uterine Infection With Coronavirus

According to Chinese researchers, four babies in the Chinese city of Wuhan are probably infected with the new coronavirus in the womb.

The four newborns only showed mild symptoms of the virus and did not need ventilation. Three of the mothers had symptoms of the lung virus before birth.

The children were all born by Caesarean section. Three babies were taken from the mother immediately after birth to minimize the risk of infection.

They were also not breastfed. The chance that they got the virus right after the birth of their mother is therefore minimal, according to the researchers.

“The results of this study seem to indicate that the virus in the womb passed from mother to baby,” the researchers said.
