Italian ex-government leader Silvio Berlusconi, who is infected with the coronavirus, would have died of a similar corona infection in March or April, according to his doctor.
“The number of virus particles in Berlusconi’s smear was so high that it certainly would not have had such a happy ending in March or April as it does now,” said Professor Alberto Zangrillo Thursday evening on the TV channel La7.
“Would it have killed him? Definitely yes, most likely yes, and he knows it.”
The 83-year-old has been treated for a coronavirus infection at San Raffaele hospital in Milan for over a week and is now recovering.
Italy was hit hard by the coronavirus in the spring. The intensive care units in the north of the country did not have enough beds and breathing equipment.
Berlusconi is in a “more than satisfactory” state, said Zangrillo, who believes his patient will recover quickly. The politician and entrepreneur Berlusconi is considered to be at risk because of his age and some previous illnesses.
On Wednesday he spoke for the first time and reported on his fight against the “hellish disease”. “It’s the worst experience of my life,” he said of his coronavirus infection.
