EMA Driver: Link Between AstraZeneca Vaccine and Thrombosis

Indeed, there is a link between AstraZeneca’s corona vaccine and the rare combination of blood clots (thrombosis) and low platelet count (thrombocytopenia) that a few dozen people contracted after vaccination.

But the benefits of the vaccine still outweigh the risks, Marco Cavaleri, head of vaccination strategy at the European Medicines Agency (EMA), told Italian media on Tuesday.

“There is a link with the vaccine. But we don’t know yet what causes this reaction,” says Cavaleri.

The EMA, the European vaccine regulator, will be discussing the AstraZeneca vaccine in the coming days. A safety committee of the organization may come with a judgment on Wednesday.

So far, the EMA said that a link had not been demonstrated but could not be ruled out yet.
