Joe Biden: Brexit Law Could Affect Trade Deal

US presidential candidate Joe Biden warns the United Kingdom that it must guard peace in Northern Ireland in the Brexit process. Otherwise, there will be no trade agreement with the United States.

In recent days there has been unrest in British politics because Prime Minister Boris Johnson wants to pass a controversial Brexit law.

This proposal runs counter to the treaty the British concluded with the EU last year on their exit. In doing so, the British are violating international law.

“We cannot allow the Good Friday Agreement that brought peace to Northern Ireland to fall victim to Brexit,” Biden said in a tweet.

“Any trade deal between the US and the UK must depend on respecting this agreement and avoiding the return of a hard border. Period.”

The Good Friday Agreement in 1998 ended sectarian violence in Northern Ireland.

To prevent tensions from rising again after the British departure from the EU, Brussels and London agreed in their separation agreement that the border between that British region and EU member state Ireland will remain open.

As a result, Northern Ireland will continue to abide by some EU rules that will soon no longer apply in other parts of the United Kingdom. With the new Brexit law, the British government is trying to adjust those agreements with its own hands.
