Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi of the US House of Representatives announced in a letter Sunday that she was ready to initiate impeachment proceedings against outgoing President Donald Trump unless he is removed from office within days.
The House of Representatives will vote Monday or Tuesday on a resolution calling on Vice President Mike Pence to appeal to the 25th amendment to the US Constitution.
Pence and cabinet members can use this to remove Trump from office if they judge that the president can no longer perform his duties.
So far, 210 members of the House of Representatives, nearly a majority, support a proposal to push for impeachment from the president following Wednesday’s riots in and around the Capitol.
Trump supporters then besieged Congressional premises, raided the building and wreaked havoc. Five people were killed and dozens injured.
