Mexico faced a record murder rate in March. It was the highest number in the period that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador was in power at 2585.
The number of murders averaged 83 per day.
One of Obrador’s election promises was to reduce crime and specifically murder rates. According to the president, there was less crime in the past quarter.
Strict measures are also in place in Mexico to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Obrador had hoped this would reduce the number of murders.
“Unfortunately, that is not the case.”
Mexico has been under the spell of drug-related gang violence for many years, with civilians and tourists often also being targeted by targeted attacks.
