Record Year for Chip Maker Melexis Thanks to the Automotive Sector

Chip producer Melexis achieved a turnover of 643.8 million euros in 2021, good for an increase of 27 percent. Melexis benefited from the ever-increasing demand for chips in the automotive sector.

Net profit rose 89 percent to EUR 131.1 million, the BEL20 company announced. “With a turnover of 166.2 million euros in the fourth quarter and 643.8 million euros for the full year, we have achieved both a record quarter and a record year,” CEO Marc Biron said in the press release. Turnover is slightly above the already revised forecasts.

Operating profit rose 97 percent to EUR 148.45 million. The growth is due to the increasing demand for light, temperature, power and other sensors that sit under the hood of a modern car. Melexis delivered an average of 18 chips per car produced worldwide, according to the CEO.

‘This brings our ambition of 20 chips per car, set in 2018, within reach.’ Cars are becoming more and more high-tech, but the electrification of the vehicle fleet is also fueling the chip hunger. The automotive sector accounted for 89 percent of sales last year.
