Ukrainian Heroes of Snake Island Traded for Russian Prisoners

Russian soldiers arrested the Ukrainian sailors who were detained on Snake Island have been released. According to the Ukrainian government, a prisoner exchange has taken place.

The 13 border guards on Snake Island in the Black Sea are said to have replied, “Russian warship, kiss our balls,” when a Russian naval vessel threatened to attack the island.

Fire was opened, and soon Ukraine reported that they had been killed. President Zelensky even said he would honour them posthumously as heroes.

But nothing turned out to be less true: the men were still alive and had been arrested by Russian soldiers. And now they are finally free. According to Ukraine, this happened on Thursday, 24 March, as part of a prisoner exchange.

Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk said 11 Russian sailors rescued from a sunken ship near Odesa had been trading for 19 Ukrainian sailors.
