Anthony Fauci, the chief corona adviser to US President Joe Biden, has warned that the pandemic in the United States is “going in the wrong direction” as too many Americans choose not to get vaccinated.
In an interview with CNN Sunday, Fauci said the coming months are not looking good if vaccination rates don’t go up. As a result, the number of infections and deaths will increase, the immunologist predicts.
About half of Americans have not yet been vaccinated. As elsewhere in the world, the Delta variant of the coronavirus is giving the pandemic a new impulse.
This is really a pandemic of the unvaccinated,” Fauci said of the current situation. “It’s like there are two Americas: the vulnerable, unvaccinated part and the relatively protected, vaccinated part.”
After a flying start at the beginning of this year, the American vaccination program is stalling. Local health authorities struggle to convince vaccine sceptics of the need to get vaccinated, The New York Times reports. Disinformation is a significant obstacle in this regard.
