Merkel Wants Stricter Measures Against Coronavirus

German Chancellor Angela Merkel wants to impose stricter measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

The maximum number of visitors to meetings outside must be reduced to fifty, and the ultimate inside is set at 25, reports DPA news agency based on sources.

It is not yet clear whether this measure should apply to all of Germany or only to regions with a lot of infections.

Alcohol sales must be restricted in those areas, the news agency reports. It is not yet known exactly what this measure will look like.

People who do not comply with the hygiene rules in catering establishments can be fined 50 euros.

Merkel will consult with the prime ministers of the sixteen German states on Tuesday about the approach to the coronavirus.

Not all regions have seen a significant increase in the number of corona cases. That is why Germany has a regional approach, with stricter measures in hard-hit areas.
